International Foundation

Many UK universities accept international students who have satisfactorily completed what is called a Foundation programme here in the UK, rather than the traditional ‘A’ level or International Baccalaureate route. Foundation programmes are focused on the subject matter that the student is likely to specialise in at university, such as science, engineering, humanities and the arts. Each also provides further training in English alongside the more specialised teaching, with the objective of preparing the student to achieve the required EFL level for the university they wish to attend by the end of the course.

To be accepted on to a Foundation programme students are usually expected to have at least IELTS level 5.0 with the more popular programmes demanding IELTS 5.5. It is becoming increasingly important to have a ‘level spread’ of component scores, with nothing less than 5.0, in order to gain most from the course. A Foundation programme is a demanding, one (academic) year course that will examine students at the end in a number of subjects. Conditional offers from universities may be made on the number of subjects passed and the achievement level in various subjects that have direct relevance to the chosen degree programme.
