UK universities offer a wide variety of specialist postgraduate courses. Some offer 'conversion courses' at masters level, specifically designed for students who wish to gain expertise in a different area from their first degree.
Taught postgraduate degrees (MA / MSc / M Ed / M Eng) are usually one year while research degrees (M Phil and PhD) typically take up to three years, although this can usually be extended by permission.
To do well at university it is essential that a student has a good grasp of the English language. The minimum entry level at Postgraduate level is usually IELTS 6.5 with an even spread of component scores. Some subjects such as Law, however, may require higher levels. Students are also expected to have performed well in their previous levels of education. Work experience may also be looked on favourably by some course leaders.
