There are over 100 UK universities, between them offering every course imaginable. Many have joint honours courses, combining two or even three main subjects, which may suit students who have not yet decided which subject to specialise in or who prefer to gain a broad spectrum of expertise.
The majority of undergraduate courses in England are three years and in Scotland four years. There are exceptions, of course, such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Architecture, which can take up to five years. Some institutions such as the University of Buckingham, have longer terms with shorter holidays, allowing an undergraduate degree to be completed inside two years.
‘Sandwich Courses’, which offer students one year practicing the expertise they have gained, usually take four years.
To do well at university it is essential that a student has a good grasp of the English language. The minimum entry level is usually IELTS 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate study, with an even spread of component scores. Students are also expected to have performed well in their previous level of education. Work experience may also be looked on favourably by some course leaders.
