Guardianship

Behaviour

In School / College

Students must adhere to the school / college rules and regulations at all times. These will be explained to the student during their induction period.

It is important to realise that a student's attitude and behaviour is at least as important as his/her academic ability.

Drugs

Drug taking or possession of drugs of any kind will not be tolerated at any time during the student’s stay in the United Kingdom. Students who are found to be taking drugs or who are found to be in possession of drugs will be dealt with severely and may be immediately expelled from the school or college they are attending. Many colleges request support from the parents to carry out random testing amongst the students in order to keep a tight control on this issue.

If a student is expelled, no compensation can be expected from the school/college in respect of fees already paid. The agreement between OPDS and the parents of the student will be considered null and void and no further responsibility will be taken concerning the welfare of the student.

Alcohol

Consumption of alcohol by students under the age of 18 is generally not permitted. However, some colleges may have areas / times where limited drinking is allowed. (Note: it is against the law in the United Kingdom for persons under the age of 18 to purchase alcohol).

Cigarettes

Smoking is not permitted in school buildings or in home stay accommodation at any time. Students must expect to be fined or suspended if they smoke and are reminded that it may lead to health problems later in life.

Smoking is also not permitted in many public buildings and only in certain areas of cafes and restaurants. (Note it is against the law in the United Kingdom for persons under the age of 16 to purchase cigarettes).

Home Stay

Students are expected to fit in with the family way of life and behave themselves at all times.

They must notify the host family of any change to their agreed daily routine and plans. For example you should telephone if you are going to arrive slightly later one evening, or if you do not require dinner one day.

Students should arrive on time for meals and other mutual appointments.

Students should always remember they are staying in someone's home and should respect the wishes of their hosts.

Always ask if you are unsure.
